Château Rieussec 2001 375ml, 1er Grand Cru Classé, Sauternes, France
In 1984, Eric de Rothschild representing Domaines Barons de Rothschild (DBR) acquired Chateau Rieussec. At the time of the purchase the estate covered 110 ha, with 68ha under vine. DBR decided that a different approach must be adopted if this legendary property was to return to its glory days. Laborious and painstaking work was carried out in the vineyard including replanting and grubbing up of less than perfect vines. A new cellar was built in 1989 with a view to ensuring wines were matured more efficiently prior to release. The property now ranks among the very best in Sauternes and sits proudly in the Rothschild portfolio.
This monumental, critically acclaimed vintage is truly an outstanding wine with exceptional finish, elegance and balance. Notes of honey, apricot, candied orange and caramel are perfectly balanced with a vibrant acidity.
