Chateau des Laurets Barons 2016, A.C. Puisseguin Saint-Emilion, France

Regular price £60.00

Château des Laurets and its adjoining land covers two appellations; Puisseguin and Montagne.  Baron is the top wine of the property, and cultivates a selection of plots, harvested and sorted by hand, to produce a blend with all the care that goes into the finest wines. After acquiring Château des Laurets in 2003, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild wanted to highlight the unique character of this estate by producing a limited vintage from a selection of the best Merlot plots. A niche wine, produced only in the best years, Château des Laurets Baron bears the mark of the great Saint‑Emilion wines.

This is a big St Emilion with lashings of plump ripe fruit and oak derived spice.  Not quite a monster, but certainly a wine fit for a gusty supper rather than a light lunch! Made only in the best vintages this is made solely from Merlot. The nose is fantastic with notes of black cherry compote, toasted vanilla, dark chocolate, black forest gateau and cassis. The palate is generous in every department with oodles of black fruit and soft tannins. This beauty will age for a decade, yet after a couple of hours in a decanter it really shows well.
