Situated between Chassagne and Puligny, this lesser-known village appellation in Bourgogne (Burgundy) is regarded highly amongst wine fanatics. Predominantly producing Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, Saint Aubin produces wines which demonstrate complexity, high quality and great value for money.

History and Terroir of Saint Aubin

In Southern Côte de Beaune (widely considered the beating heart of Burgundy white wines) sits Saint Aubin, an AOC with one of the highest proportions of Premier Cru vineyards in the whole of France. Having been granted official recognition as an appellation in 1937, Saint Aubin historically produced higher quantities of red wine. However, local winemakers redirected their energies towards white wine production to monopolize on the increasing demand for Bourgogne white wines. With altitudes of 300 to 350 metres, southeast facing slopes and limestone rich clay soils, Saint Aubin’s terroir provides the perfect components for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Wine Characteristics

Chardonnays from Saint Aubin tend to resemble white florals and minerality in aroma. On the palate, distinctive notes of almond and flint appear, which develop into richer, marzipan flavours with age. Chardonnays from this appellation have an elegance and complexity which blossoms over time, tending to pair well with meaty-textured fish and grilled crustaceans like crab and lobster.

When it comes to Pinot Noirs from Saint Aubin, they usually appear crimson in colour and evoke aromas of blackberries and Morello cherry. On the palate, a thick, silky texture with deeper notes of spice fill the mouth. Like the Chardonnays from this region, the Pinot Noirs become more complex with age, and the tannic structures of the wine compliment the richness of dishes like foie gras and roast pork perfectly.

The Wines

Maison Roche de Bellene Saint-Aubin Premier Cru La Chateniere | Waddesdon Manor

Saint-Aubin is always regarded as one of the finest appellations to grow world class Chardonnay. This premier cru vineyard, La Chateniere, offers some much needed restraint in such a warm vintage. Expect notes of apricot, peach, freshly picked apples as well as some buttered toast, hazelnuts and hints of oak. The palate is precise and exacting, with pinpoint freshness yet has some fun with the richness of the buttered orchard fruit that comes through.
